Synopsis of the University of Artificial Thoughts

• Our protagonist, Roger, welcomes the viewer to his “mental universe." We learn that Roger is a recent widower. • Since his wife’s death, Roger has set aside his longtime career as a successful textbook author.• With new free time he has taken up an entirely interior mental project of cataloguing what he calls his "bestiary of unstable ideas"—fascinating paradoxical tropes, mental constructions, self consuming ideas, etc.• “Bestiary:” Def. “A catalogue of bizarre creatures, real or imagined,” in this case, odd unstable ideas with a mental life of their own.• Why the obsession with unstable ideas? As a college freshman Roger experienced a psychological breakdown that led to shock therapy, which fortunately resulted in a complete recovery.• As he pursues his solitary bestiary our widowed protagonist experiments with online dating.• Soon he finds someone, “Mary,” with whom he seems to click.• While cleaning out the attic of his deceased mother he discovers a box from his drug-addled youth, entitled “The University of Racing Thoughts,” of which he has absolutely no memory.• He wonders whether his new “text partner, “Mary,” also has a secret interior life. Yes! What she calls her diary of “perfect moments.”• As his infatuation with Mary progresses, our protagonist also becomes obsessed with his University of Racing Thoughts, which he soon realizes is a prequel to his Bestiary.• When Mary suddenly cools to him, he becomes overwhelmed by the voice of his younger self as expressed in the "Racing Thoughts" journal, whose dizzying ideas he can no longer distinguish from his own.
