Quarrels with My Amanuensis is a Renaissance fable about genius, vanity, authorship, and the dangerous art of telling another man’s truth. It is inspired by the renowned autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini, "La Vita."
In Florence, the young scholar Donato de Fiesole is hired as secretary to the brilliant, blasphemous, violent goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini, hoping to coax from him a memoir worthy of history. But as Cellini’s stories grow grander, uglier, and less reliable, Donato begins secretly composing an “anti-memoir” — a purified version he believes captures the maestro’s true essence.
What begins as transcription becomes rivalry: artist against witness, truth against beauty, love against ambition.
With Donato’s beloved Aleada caught between them, the struggle becomes less about preserving Cellini’s life than about who has the right to shape the past.
